Did Your Optician Adjust Your Eyeglasses Upon Delivery?

I went shopping with my wife at the mall the other day and I just felt very compelled to troll around in all the optical shops. I guess I was kind of on a secret shopper mission. Ha! No, what I was really doing was snooping around and checking out the different eyeglass shops to see how well they were run. In each store I studied the staff members and evaluated their level of skill and training on the job.

One of the things that surprised me the most is that most all of the eyeglass stores I secret shopped, were not dispensing their customer’s eyeglasses with an adjustment. They were just handing their customers the eyeglasses in a case and thanking them for coming in to see them. LOL!!!

I couldn’t believe what I was seeing! Eyeglasses need to be adjusted to assure proper fit and proper vision. Amazingly, if I were to report these stores there would be some issues. I very well just might. The large problem about this situation is that in this business a large percentage of the responsibility doesn’t fall on the managers of the store but rather the State Licensed Optician. If the licensed optician is on duty they are responsible for the things that happen in the store regarding the quality of the dispensary.

Unfortunately, being a licensed optician puts yourself into a catch 22 situation. You have to abide by the laws of the State but also you’ll find that the standards of performance you’re held accountable in your job conflict with your license. One thing is for sure, dispensing eyeglasses to the general public without fitting them and verifying the overall vision acuity and comfort is setting yourself up for big trouble.
