I went shopping with my wife at the mall the other day and I just felt very compelled to troll around in all the optical shops. I guess I was kind of on a secret shopper mission. Ha! No, what I was really doing was snooping around and checking out the different eyeglass shops to see how well they were run. In each store I studied the staff members and evaluated their level of skill and training on the job.
One of the things that surprised me the most is that most all of the eyeglass stores I secret shopped, were not dispensing their customer’s eyeglasses with an adjustment. They were just handing their customers the eyeglasses in a case and thanking them for coming in to see them. LOL!!!
I couldn’t believe what I was seeing! Eyeglasses need to be adjusted to assure proper fit and proper vision. Amazingly, if I were to report these stores there would be some issues. I very well just might. The large problem about this situation is that in this business a large percentage of the responsibility doesn’t fall on the managers of the store but rather the State Licensed Optician. If the licensed optician is on duty they are responsible for the things that happen in the store regarding the quality of the dispensary.
Unfortunately, being a licensed optician puts yourself into a catch 22 situation. You have to abide by the laws of the State but also you’ll find that the standards of performance you’re held accountable in your job conflict with your license. One thing is for sure, dispensing eyeglasses to the general public without fitting them and verifying the overall vision acuity and comfort is setting yourself up for big trouble.

Many of us take our eyesight for granted. However, losing your eyesight is no joking matter. Many people are interested in Transition Lenses. For those who don’t know, Transition Lenses are the lenses that change from light to dark when you go from inside to outdoors. Many people enjoy the option of owning a pair of prescription eyeglasses filled with Transition Lenses. However, there are many considerations to be made in choosing this type of lens.
Transition Lenses do not get very dark. Technologies have improved over the years, but still to this day, Transition Lenses will not take the place of prescription sunglasses. This fact is very evident on partly cloudy days, where it is still very bright but with an overcast.
Another consideration is the fact that Transition Lenses always have a slight tint to them, even when you’re inside. So, if you’re in a situation where you don’t want to appear to be wearing shaded lenses, such as being on TV or getting your picture taken, Transition Lenses might not be the best option.
Cost is a significant consideration as well. Transition Lenses are very expensive. In many cases you can walk out of the eyeglass shop with a pair of clear prescription eyeglasses and a pair of prescription sunglasses for the same price as one pair of prescription eyeglasses filled with Transition Lenses.
The great part about Transition Lenses is the fact that you can in essence eliminate the need for having two pairs of eyeglasses. For me, I wear two pairs of eyeglasses. I own a pair of clear prescription eyewear and a specially made pair of prescription sunglasses. I have to admit, when I go for a drive, it is kind of a pain in the butt having to remove my clear pair, put them in the case and then dig out my prescription sunglasses and put them on.

So you have a few scratches in your eyeglass lenses and perhaps you have seen a few television commercials advertising products that help remove scratches from eyeglasses. The common question that people ask is whether or not there are products made that can help remove scratches from eyeglasses. The answer is actually yes and no. I’ll explain.
Light scratches can be removed from lenses using a white Sanford peel-off china marker.
This concept is what I believe lead to the creation of many of the infomercial products found on television. Using a standard white grease pencil can and will remove very light and superficial scratches out of eyeglass lenses one of two ways by either buffing or polishing out the scratched area or simply by filling in material into the scratch.

As far as purchasing the famous infomercial products seen on TV they are a waste of money as you can purchase a white grease pencil from your local office supply store for under a dollar.
The process of repairing the scratch in your eyeglasses is fairly easy. Simply color in a round circle around over the area of your lenses that are scratched and then take a clean sham and lightly polish the scratched area.
The light friction and heat generated from the polishing and buffing will either blend the scratch in or the material from the grease pencil will fill the void where the scratch was. Keep in mind, this only works for very light or superficial scratches. This method will not remove deep scratches or dents in your eyeglass lenses.
Do not do this if you have anti-reflective lenses. If you have scratches in your anti-reflective lenses, you’re just out of luck. Anti-reflective lenses scratch and smudge very easily. Attempting to remove scratches from anti-reflective lenses will only cause more damage to them.
